Following the tragic events in Las Vegas, Homeland and National Security Law expert and Cooley Law School Associate Dean Michael C.H. McDaniel was contacted by media outlets to comment as an expert resource. Dean McDaniel provided analysis about the shooting that killed 58 individuals who attended the Route 91 Harvest Festival. He also talked about various methods law enforcement and venues use to prevent tragedies and how individuals can protect themselves at large-scale events.
Cooley Law School, a military friendly and designated Yellow Ribbon School, talks to its military students, faculty and graduates about their journey from the military to law school and about their careers. This month's Military feature is Cooley Professor Jeffrey Swartz. After entering the National Guard during college, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant E5, Professor Swartz had an illustrious career in the law, including serving as a judge, before he fulfilled his desire to teach and work in academia.

This spring, The Hon. Craig C. Villanti, chief judge of the Florida Second District Court of Appeal, invited Maryam Saleh, a recent Western Michigan University Cooley Law School graduate and top Bar performer in the district, to speak on behalf of the attorneys being sworn in that day. The Second District covers 14 counties in five judicial circuits. There are five total District Courts of Appeal in Florida. We are proud and honored of Maryam and her accomplishments. Below is her speech from May 9, 2016, along with video excerpts about her journey in life, in law school, and what drives her going forward.

The common perception of foreign study is total immersion into another culture to live and learn somewhere far from home. This is completely true.
