DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE

Dear Alumni and Friends,

Fall is in full swing at Cooley! The 1L students have been welcomed and are feeling more settled. They are now well on their way to completing their first term of classes. They, along with returning second and third-year students, have brought with them lots of energy and excitement for the new academic year.

Bill Arnold

Both the Lansing and Tampa Bay campuses are bustling with events and activities bringing together students, faculty, alumni, and other members of the legal community.

In this Benchmark Column, you will find information about upcoming opportunities for alumni as well as special recognitions for Distinguished Professor Emeritus Joe Kimble and current 3L student Frances Silney-Bah.

As always, please contact the Advancement and Alumni Relations Office if there is we can assist you in any way or if you are interested in hosting an alumni event in your area.

Very truly, Bill Arnold, Director of Advancement and Alumni Relations

ONLINE MENTORING EVENT AT CAMPUSES

On Monday, Nov. 6 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. (EST) the Cooley Law School Alumni Association and the Cooley Student Bar Associations are hosting their next Mentoring Motions online networking event. This event provides current students the opportunity to meet and network with Cooley graduates from around the country who are working in fields that align with students’ career interests. This is a fun and easy way for alumni to meet with and support current Cooley students. During the one-hour event, alumni and students will be paired in a series of small breakout groups of 3-4 people. The small group format allows  everyone to get to know each other better.

CALL FOR COOLEY LAW EXTERN SUPERVISORS

Did you know that Cooley alumni help fuel one of the most extensive law school externship programs in the country? Our students have the ability to choose from over 3,000 externship sites worldwide, many hosted by our own graduates. We would like to see more graduates give back by serving as a supervisor for a Cooley student. Can you help? Each supervising attorney agrees to assign an extern legal work and to act as a teacher and mentor, providing feedback and insights to the student. Find out more below, or reach out to us at externs@cooley.edu.

STUDENT FEATURE

Frances Silney-Bah, a rising 3L at the Lansing campus was the recipient of Plunkett Cooney PC’s inaugural diversity scholarship. The law firm’s essay review panel members were tasked with selecting finalists from a significant number of high-quality essays. When reviewing submissions, panel members considered the essays based on each author’s response to a prompt about life experiences, challenges, triumphs and/or background that influenced their career choice and impacted their approach to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion as they enter the legal profession.
