Surviving the First Year of Law School: An Interview With Natalie Winquist

SURVIVING_THE_FIRST_YEAR_IN_LAW_SCHOOL-_1

In today's episode I spoke with Western Michigan University Cooley Law School student Natalie Winquist. Natalie is a student from Grand Rapids, Michigan who just completed her first year of law school and she shared some valuable tips with all of our listener about how they can be successful during their first year in law school.

Natalie shared with us that she was surprised at how well she was able to do in her first year. She said that as a first year law student she was worried that perhaps she "was an impostor and that I really shouldn't have be there." However, after going through the first term and getting her grades back she found a new sense of confidence and realized that in fact she was meant to go to law school and that she was being successful. Her second semester was completely different than the first!

She encouraged everyone to have confidence in themselves in going into law school. Also, visit your professors and get to know them. She said "they are normal people and want to see you succeed."

Natalie also mentioned that it was so important to get involved in law school. She said that being involved completely enriched her experienced and opened opportunities for her in her law school experience.

In the end she said that you need to make sure that you understand the material, talk to your professors and set aside time to study and go over the notes that you have made in your classes and know that this is a marathon and not a sprint

I want to thank Natalie for sharing her story and for her willingness of sharing these great tips to help other law students succeed!
