Today in the Law School Insider we explore the journey that Bethany Slomski, alumna of Cooley Law School as well as In-House Senior Counsel for a financial services agency, where she spends much of her time dealing with mortgages.
Bethany Slomski started her career in the prosecutors office for the City of Chicago, but as years went on, she followed where opportunity led her, and for her it was into the financial services industry.
Bethany has come to find that the financial services industry is ever-changing, and this allows her to learn upon the versatility of her legal degree to find success in the industry as a whole.
All of the opportunities that have followed her have come because she was open to the opportunities as they presented themselves and Bethany made it clear that this is something that all law students would do well to follow.
For Bethany, when she selected law school as the option she wished to pursue she did this because she found that she was looking to go into a career that provided her a life but also one that provided a lot of options.
As she entered law school she found, as many law students do, that law school can be a bit overwhelming at times. Because of this she was able to set up some things that helped her along the way including setting:
Now that she has been in her career for some time she has come to find that she finds success in the daily worked that she does and her work product more than the financial rewards that come with the quality work.
In regards to the financial services agency she has found that attending a university like Western Michigan University - Cooley Law School was a perfect choice for her. She was thankful that she had been required to take courses in areas such as Secured Transactions and Tax Law, both areas that she finds that she draws on daily.
Outside of these courses, she learned and grew in this field by attending conferences and legal seminars as well as through connecting with amazing mentors who gave her the opportunity to ask questions.
In closing, Bethany mentioned that all future lawyers should keep in mind that it is very important to keep yourself open to as many opportunities as you can in law school and beyond. By being open to opportunities you give yourself the ability to learn and network.
