APRIL 2024 I  QUARTERLY PUBLICATON FOR COOLEY ALUMNI AND FRIENDS

DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE

Dear Alumni and Friends,

As usual, there is no shortage of things happening in and around the law school. Hilary Term concluded in April and commencement ceremonies were held at both campuses for members of the Antonin Scalia Class.

Bill Arnold

The Hon. Jalal Harb, (1987, Grant Class) provided the keynote for the Tampa Bay campus ceremony. You can watch Judge Harb's remarks online

Now, students and faculty are gearing up for the start of Trinity Term. In the interim, we celebrated Law Day 2024 with a webinar featuring Cooley graduate and adjunct professor Colin Maguire (2013, Marshall Class).

Maguire, who is currently working with the Department of Homeland Security in Immigration and Customs Enforcement, spoke on the Law Day theme of Voices of Democracy. Below, you will find details on a few more upcoming events and programs that alumni and friends are invited to attend. In addition, I invite you to read about the recent achievements of several Cooley alumni. Check out the Law Review's transition to being an online publication, get to know Ahmad Saifi, and don't forget to submit any news you would like to share with others in our Cooley community.

Finally, if your summer travel plans bring you near either the Lansing or Tampa Bay campus, please let us know. We would love to welcome you back to campus for a visit.

Very truly, Bill ArnoldDirector of Advancement and Alumni Relations

COOLEY Law review goes digital

1920x1080_logo

The Cooley Law Review has just published its first online edition.

After considerable consideration, research, and discussion, the editorial staff of The Cooley Law Review decided to move the publication online.

Like so many other publications, moving to an online format creates efficiencies that will reduce costs while also expanding access and readership.

Be sure to check out the inaugural digital edition that includes Professors Brendan Beery and Matt Marin's study on the optimal depth of analysis in essay answers and Distinguished Professor Emeritus Joe Kimble's piece answering textualists who favor the use of dictionaries in judicial decision-making.

STUDENT FEATURE

"One of the toughest decisions I had to make was breaking away from the expectations set by my family," said Ahmad Saifi. "I consider myself a double immigrant. My grandparents are from Lebanon and migrated to Brazil and my parents migrated from Brazil to the U.S."

Growing up in a family full of businessmen and medical doctors, Saifi wasn’t sure that was the path for him.

"I did not like the medical world much and dealing with sick patients and gore, but I did like to debate."
