WINTER 2019

Welcome to the January 2019 Winter issue of Benchmark Column. Last year was a year of change, from the loss of our founder, the Hon. Thomas E. Brennan, to the transition of leadership at WMU-Cooley Law School. We encourage you to be involved in your law school alma mater. Join the Alumni Association or reach out to the Alumni Outreach Committee. Caring and connected alumni make all the difference, as we respect where we've been and provide support in the path forward.

uniform bar exam

There have been lots of discussions surrounding the bar exam lately, not only between the professionals inside our own institution, but from legal experts throughout the United States. One idea that has caught on is the idea of a Uniform Bar Exam (UBE). The UBE allows new lawyers who pass the exam to transfer their score when applying for admission to another jurisdiction. Thirty-five states and territories have adopted the UBE, including New York, Illinois, Ohio and Texas. Find out more in this blog post by Distinguished Professor Emeritus Otto Stockmeyer.

GRADS HOLDING OFFICE

josh bemis advocate for advocacy

Josh Bemis loved hockey and was good enough to plan a career out of it - until injuries put his chances of an NHL career literally on ice. But that setback didn't keep him down for long. A law career was waiting, including success in law school, his Advocacy class, and his winning team at the New York Bar Association's Moot Court competition.
